Is it time to refresh your network?

Have you ever hesitated to reach out to an old friend or colleague because you felt guilty for falling out of touch? Or maybe you wondered if the person would remember you, or care to connect at all after “all this time”?

I’ve personally been in that position and I’ve also watched clients struggle to put themselves out there and make the first move to re-engage old colleagues even online.

My personal branding clients have expressed not wanting to reach out for fear of not being remembered, or being ignored. They may even forgo asking for valuable testimonials because it’s been so long since they completed a client engagement.

I totally get it and have been guilty of it myself. I’ve been too “in my head” to reach out to an old client, colleague or friend for fear of it seeming “weird” that I was reaching out at all. If I’ve found myself randomly curious about what someone’s been up to, I may have stopped myself because I was afraid the curiosity would not have been mutual, or that re-entry would be awkward.

But a recent trip to Tennessee reminded me just how quickly you can break those old relationships back in, and how often our fears around reaching out (and being potentially rejected) are completely unfounded.

Whether you’re hesitating to make a Linkedin request, longing to reconnect with an old friend, or have been meaning to send an old colleague a note I encourage to think of what you’re potentially missing out on by NOT reaching out.

Also, I want you to be encouraged. If you haven’t gotten around to reaching out to an old contact, know that it’s not as awkward as you may fear it to be.

More often than not, your old connections will be thrilled to hear from you, and glad you got the communication ball rolling again.
